STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
WHO WE ARE
The State Route 9 Coalition is composed of county, city, transit, business,
education and community leaders in Snohomish County who are committed to supporting
the needed improvements for capacity, freight mobility and safety of SR 9 between
SR 522 and SR 530.
OUR MISSION
The State Route 9 Coalition’s mission is to secure funding for projects
identified by the SR 9 Corridor Working Group in the Route Development Plan to
improve SR 9 in Snohomish County for capacity and safety as a highway transportation
corridor serving the needs of motorists, commerce, transit and non-motorized uses.
WHY STATE ROUTE 9 MATTERS:
- SR 9 is designated as a Highway of Statewide
Significance and is the only north-south highway that
parallels I-5 in Snohomish County;
- SR 9 provides the only regional transportation
alternative for vehicles in the event of a major
incident that affects I-5;
- Traffic volumes have grown to 37,000 vehicles per day,
causing increasing delays for commuters, freight and
others;
- The Puget Sound Regional Council’s projected growth rate
in Snohomish County requires funding now to accommodate
future additional traffic demands;
- Bus transit is planned for SR 9 but cannot be
implemented without capacity improvements.
WHAT YOU CAN DO:
- Educate yourself about the SR 9 Route Development Plan prepared
by the State Department of Transportation;
- Support phased capital budget and grant funding needed to complete
prioritized improvement projects;
- Help us grow a network of supporters who are willing to work
together for the common purpose of improving SR 9;
- Talk with federal and state legislators about what they can do to
help fund needed SR 9 improvements.
