Bickford Ave Sub-Area Transportation Study

A proposed network of streets to accommodate the future growth of the Bickford Avenue corridor has been drafted by the City of Snohomish.

With the annexation of the Bickford Ave Area into the City limits in November 2002, the City of Snohomish began discussing the need to provide an effective transportation network (streets, sidewalks and bicycle paths) for that area. Creating this transportation plan is vital for economic growth and for efficient movement of vehicles, goods and people in this new area of Snohomish.

Perteet Engineering was selected to complete the study and make recommendations for the development of a transportation network in the Bickford Ave sub-area. The sub-area is bounded on the east by State Route (SR) 9, on the north by SR 2, on the west by 83rd Ave SE and on the south by 72nd St SE/16th St. The consultant analyzed submitted development plans, land use projections, terrain features and environmental constraints.

Traffic was estimated based vehicle trip generation planning factors. An arterial collector system was developed based on the factors analyzed. Key intersections were also analyzed to determine improvements that would be necessary to support the projected traffic volumes. In addition, existing streets were analyzed to determine lane improvements needed.

Transportation Planning also needs to analyze non-motorized (walking and biking) travel needs.

Recommendations were made for sidewalks and bike lanes to reduce vehicle traffic. The existing transit system was reviewed and service growth projected for these needs as well.

While the planning focused on the Bickford Ave sub-area, it also considered needed connections to the remainder of the City of Snohomish. This not only included the arterial collector system, but also sidewalks and bike routes. The bike routes provide linkage to the regional trail system; primarily the Centennial trail and the Riverfront trail.
