MEET LARRY BAUMAN
OUR CITY MANAGER
On May 7, 2002, the Snohomish City Council appointed Larry Bauman as
the city's new City Manager. The Council's selection of Bauman from a field of 51 candidates ended
a nationwide search for a new city manager..
Mayor Cameron Bailey said, "On behalf of the whole City Council,
I am happy to welcome Larry Bauman to the City of Snohomish. The
selection of a city manager is one of the most important decisions a
City Council ever makes. We are confident that we made the right
decision by selecting Larry."
"I am truly fortunate to have the opportunity to work for the
City Council and the beautiful community of Snohomish," said
Bauman. "While I realize there are important challenges and issues
to address in the city, everyone I've met in Snohomish leads me to
believe that this is one City whose residents are positively involved in
supporting and improving their community."
"I think Snohomish represents the best of small cities that are
facing the future with creativity and imagination in order to preserve
their history while working to continually to enhance their natural
strengths," Bauman said. "It's an honor for me to have this
chance to lead the city organization and to help achieve this
community's goals."
Bauman has worked as the assistant city manager for the City of
Shoreline since 1996, starting there soon after it incorporated the
northwestern-most section of King County in late 1995. He accepted the
position in Shoreline after seven years of working for the City of
Oceanside in Southern California.
As assistant city manager in Shoreline, Bauman directed many special
projects and supervised the offices of community and government
relations, customer services, human services and the city clerk. He also
served as Shoreline's interim city manager for half a year in 2000-2001
and on an interim basis also directed its public works, parks and
information services departments. While at the City of Oceanside, Bauman
led efforts to redevelop a blighted downtown area by creating an action
plan to implement its economic development program.
In addition to his municipal government experience, he has also
worked as a press secretary to former Clinton White House Chief of Staff
Leon Panetta during the first term Panetta represented California's
central coast area in the U.S. House of Representatives.
He worked for six years as a daily newspaper reporter and editor for
California and Arizona newspapers and also worked as the communications
director for the California State Supervisors Association, a division of
the California State Employees Association.
Bauman is 50 years old and holds a bachelor's degree in politics from
the University of California at Santa Cruz and a master's degree in
journalism from Columbia University.
